It is Feast time again. The South Jersey newspapers are full of ads from local merchants, the kids are on the phone making plans to meet their friends at the corner of the church and carnival trucks and RV's are parking in the lot off French Street. Driving down Third Street in Hammonton, it is easy to get excited about family fun as Mount Carmel Society volunteers reassemble the wooden structures. As each construction takes shape we are one step closer to the most delicious sausage and pepper sandwiches, lovingly prepared by the Friends of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at the Saint Joseph Food Stand.
The 133rd annual Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and carnival will begin on July 15th and run through the 20th with the opening of the concession stands. The actual Feast Day kicks off on July 16th at 4pm when the statues from Saint Joseph's Church will emerge and be carried through the streets in the yearly procession of Saints. The dedicated that come from all over South Jersey and beyond to take part in the confessions, devotions and the Holy sacrifice of the Mass will be treated to a fireworks display. The carnival rides will be running, providing lots of thrills for families. This year's best prize will be a new 2008 Cadillac CTS and also a fantastic 50/50 prize. The car raffle is only $5 a ticket and the largest percentage of previous winners have been local residents that bought their tickets directly from the stand on-site. All funds raised benefit the Catholic Churches and families of Hammonton
The saints who will be represented in this years procession include: St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist, St. Ann, St. Jude, St. Lucy, St. Anthony Abbot, St. Rocco, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Rita, St Vincent Pallotti, Millagrossa, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Padre Pio, Assumption, Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
